Before we start talking about hair grades, let’s take a look at the different elements of wefted weaving hair.

Wefts
This is the stitching pattern used to create the weft. A weft can be made with a double or single layering of hair. Quality wefts should be flexible, not stiff. The tension used to sew the wefts should not be too tight or too loose, as this will cause shedding.

Double wefted hair is less prone to shedding and can, therefore, last longer.

Hair type
Look for 100% human hair. If it’s from a single donor (all the hair came from one person), it’s more likely to be of higher quality.

Chemical Treatments
This is especially important if you are looking for 100% virgin hair. If you see hair advertised as 100% virgin but also see mentions of it being chemically treated, you’re being lied to.

Processed vs Unprocessed
100% of all hair on the market will be coated in silicon or conditioner before reaching the buyer. The silicon/conditioner does not alter the hair chemically but can hide different imperfections of the strands. Non-processed hair will not be chemically altered, just conditioned, and should have no real smell. Processed hair will have a chemical smell that often results in the “corn chip” smell when wet.

Steamed vs Chemically Altered
Most virgin bundles are naturally a loose wave texture, however, to achieve different curl patterns the hair must be styled. The two ways of achieving curls are steam processing which uses steam from filtered water to open the cuticle and style the hair according to the mold of the curl pattern. (This is much like using rollers on your wet natural hair.) Chemically styling the hair is a process in which chemicals are used to permanently alter the pattern of the hair. (This is much like perming or relaxing your natural hair.)

Remy or Non-Remy

Remy or Non-Remy

Remy hair means all the cuticles in the hair remain intact and facing the same direction. The cuticles of the hair look and act as shingles on a roof to trap or block moisture from entering the hair shaft. This means the hair is less likely to shed/tangle.

8A Remy hair
Highly porous high-grade human hair can be colored to a medium brown and, with proper care, can last up to 6 months.

10A Virgin hair
Medium porous premium remy human hair can be colored up to a dark blonde tone and, with proper care, can last up to 12 months.

12A Virgin Remy
These grades of hair are considered the Luxury Grade. It might be more expensive, but well worth the cost because of the great quality. A higher grade of hair will result in less shedding and tangling. This quality hair can last over 12 months with proper care.
